Drumsticks are obtained from drumstick tree which is also called as Moringa oleifera, ben oil tree, horseradish tree or benzoil tree.

You can easily find drumsticks tree in Indian MarketIt is a little bit different from other curries like aloo baingan curry, tomato curry, potato curry, palak paneer curry,etc.

Drumsticks are hardYou have to cut them into pieces before you cook itRemove the peel of drumsticks also.

In Hindi Drumstick called as Senjana ; In Kannada, it is known as Guggala, Mochaka, Mochaka maraIn Konkani it is known as Mashinga; In Malayalam its name is Muringai; In Marathi, it is called as Shevga ; In Telugu, it is known as Mochakamu,Mulaga, Mulaga Chettu, etc.

As drumsticks are known different names in various states of India but think is common everyone like to make dishes from it.

Memorable Moment

When I was a child I didn’t like Drumstick CurryAs it’s sabzi look a little bit weird from regular dishesSo I always resist to eat it.

In our house my mom is strict about everything like eating healthy dishes, all the dishes she cooks we must eat it, no one is allow to waste food in plate or leave without finished it.

As I mention we have to eat the dishes but she cook really wellBut still we always make comment like in today’s food is not that tasty or salt is less in itThen my mom will get  a little bit angryShe said if the salt is less then add it yourself.

One day my Grandmother my mom’s mother has come to our houseShe brings drumsticks with herI was happy that she has arrived.  A little bit sad that my mom will make drumsticks & we have to eatOthers are not sad as they are ok with it.

But my grandmother had noticed it that I was sadThen she asks me about what’s the matterThen I told her I didn’t like drumstick curry but mom will not listen to me.

As my mom is strict but my grandmother is not that much strictI think that how lovely my grandmother is! She asked me about my sadness.

I thought that my mom is too rudeBut she neverShe just wants us to eat healthily & stay healthy.

Then my grandmother made special drumstick curry for usI liked that curryFrom that my mom also cooks drumsticks curry like that way my grandmother’s cookAs this incident happened & I started liking drumsticks curry.

Ingredients :

  1. Drumsticks( Shevgyachya Shenga) – 3 to 4 (cut & peel)

  2. Water (Pani) – 4 to 5 cups

  3. Red Chili Powder (Lal Mirch) – 1 teaspoon

  4. Turmeric Powder ( Haldi) – 1 teaspoon

  5. Salt (Namak) – As you like

  6. Gram Masala – 1 teaspoon

  7. Oil (Tel) – 4 teaspoon

  8. ed Coconut Powder ( Bhuna hua Nariyal/Khobara Powder) – ½ cup (Grind)

  9. Garlic & Green chili paste – 1 teaspoon

  10. Roasted Peanuts (Bhuna hua Moongphalli ) – ½ cup

  11. ed Onion in oil (Tel me Bhuna hua Pyaz ) – 1

  12. Corainder (Dhania Patta) – ½ cup (chopped)


Drumstick ki Sabzi Recipe/Shevgyacha Senga chi Bhaji


  1. Take 3 to 4 drumsticks & cut them into medium sized piecesPeel off the drumsticks.

  2. Rinse off the drumsticks into the water.

  3. Heat a pan or Kadhai add 5 cups of water and drumsticks & 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder.

  4. Boil drumsticks for 10 minutes on medium flame.

  5. Take roasted peanuts, grilled onion in oil, coriander & grind it in a mixer.

  6. Heat a Pan or Kadhai add 4 teaspoons of oil for 1 secondAdd 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds & carom seeds.

  7. Add the ground mixture of roasted peanuts, grilled onion in oil, coriander paste in pan & allow to for 2 minutes.

  8. After that add 1 teaspoon of red chili powder, turmeric powder, gram masala, salt, ginger green chili paste, grilled coconut powder & mix it well.

  9. Add drumsticks & mix them well for 1 minute.

  10. After that add the remaining 4 cups of water in which drumsticks boiled.

  11. Allow it to cook it for 10 minutes.

  12. Serve it as you like warm or cool with coriander.

Drumsticks Curry Recipe in detail with step step process


  1. Take 3 to 4 Drumsticks or Shevgyaseng & cut them like this in order to make 4 to 5 pieces of it.

  2. Take a pot to add 4 to 5 cups of water & washed the cut pieces of drumsticks.

  3. Rinse off drumsticks pieces in a plate.

  4. Heat a Pan or Kadhai add 4 to 5 cups of waterAdd drumsticks pieces & the ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder for making its taste betterThis process softens the drumsticks & while cooking it make the recipe fast & tasty.

  5. Allow it to boil for 10 minutes on medium flame & then off itDon’t through the boiled waterWe will add this water for cookingDon’t waste as it has valuable proteins & minerals in it.

  6. Take a pan & ½ cup of groundnuts and roast them on a medium flame for 5 minutes & allow it to look.

  7. Heat a pan add 1 teaspoon of oil & chopped onion & grilled itStir it until it becomes golden brownThen off the flame.

  8. Take a mixer or grinder & add roast groundnuts, grilled onion & chopped corianderGrind it wellYou can also add a little bit of water to adjust it.

  9. Heat a pan on medium flame add 4 teaspoons of oil allows it for few seconds.

  10. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds & carom seeds in oil.

  11. Add the ground paste of roasted groundnuts, grilled onion & chopped coriander & allow it for 1 to 2 minutesThe paste will get thinner and oil gets out of it.

  12. After that rinse off that drumsticks pieces from that boiled water & add to the pan & mix it well with the mixtureAllow it for 1 to 2 minutes.

  13. Then add that boiled water in which you have boiled the drumsticks & stir it well.

  14. Allow to cook it for 10 minutes on medium flameAfter 1 to 2 minutes mix them wellThen off the flame.

  15. Serve the drumstick curry with rootis, pooris, rice, etcas you like garnishing with the coriander.


Important Points

  1. Cook the Drumsticks in Aluminium Kadhai or Pan or Iron Kadhai or PanDo not cook in a steel panIt will burn from bottom side

  2. Peel the Drumsticks before you boil.

  3. Boil the peel drumsticks in order to make it smooth & soft to eat.

  4. Do not waste that boiled water in which the drumsticks boil Because contains all essentials proteins & vitamins.

  5. Add that boiled water when you make curry in order to properly utilize it.

      Yes, you can omit ground nutsYou can use Coconut,sesame or cashews instead of ground nuts.
